Giving chocolates at Christmas
Christmas and chocolates are an inseparable duo in France. But where does this tradition come from?
The history of giving chocolates at Christmas
Giving chocolates at Christmas dates back to the 19th century. At that time, chocolate was a luxury product reserved for the elite and used mainly as a hot drink.
With the rise of the chocolate industry and advances in processing techniques, chocolate became more accessible, and French confectioners began offering assortments to celebrate Christmas.
These chocolates symbolized abundance and generosity, key values associated with the end-of-year celebrations. Their success has never waned. They gradually found their place under the Christmas tree, in advent calendars, or as gifts.
Today, giving chocolates is a deeply rooted tradition in French households. More than just a gift, it is a delicious gesture shared with pleasure during family moments or with friends.
Why make your own chocolates?
While giving chocolates at Christmas is a tradition, making them yourself is a trend that is winning over more and more food lovers. Here’s why making your own chocolates is an excellent idea:
Originality and personalization
Creating your own chocolates allows you to let your creativity run free. You can experiment with flavors and ingredients to offer a unique product tailored to your loved ones’ tastes.
For example, incorporating superfoods such as acai adds an exotic and modern touch to your creations.
Ingredient control
Making your own chocolates means ensuring the quality of the products used. You can choose organic, fair-trade ingredients without additives.
It is also an opportunity to limit added sugars and choose healthier alternatives with lower-glycemic-index products, such as date syrup or honey.
An eco-friendly gesture
Industrial chocolates are often accompanied by multiple, non-recyclable layers of packaging. By making your own chocolates, you considerably reduce waste. In fact, you can easily buy chocolate discs in bulk.
You can also opt for reusable or homemade packaging, such as kraft paper or glass jars. By choosing ingredients from responsible supply chains, you also support sustainable and fair agricultural practices.
A convivial activity
Making your own chocolates is a fun and rewarding activity to share with family or friends. It is an opportunity to create memories together while preparing delicious gifts.
