Is acai a sustainable product?
Yes, when it comes from sustainable sources. At Nossa!, acai is harvested in the Amazon rainforest without deforestation, pesticides, or irrigation, making it a crop with a low environmental impact.
What is the environmental impact of acai?
The impact depends heavily on agricultural and logistical practices. In our case, acai emits approximately 0.6 to 0.7 kg of CO₂ per kilogram, thanks to wild harvesting and optimized transport via sea freight.
Does acai contribute to deforestation in the Amazon?
No, in a regenerative model, açaí does not contribute to deforestation. On the contrary, it plays a key role in preserving the Amazon rainforest.
Açaí grows naturally in floodplains and forest ecosystems throughout the Amazon, allowing for harvesting without destroying ecosystems. When integrated into an agroforestry model, it becomes a direct economic alternative to land conversion.
By adding value to acai, producers can generate sustainable income without needing to clear their land for intensive crops like soybeans intended for cattle feed. These activities are often the cause of deforestation in the Amazon.
Thus, the forest becomes more profitable standing than destroyed. This encourages ecosystem conservation, crop diversification, and the maintenance of a local economy based on biodiversity rather than deforestation.
