So, the idea is to ensure that the forest is more profitable when it’s alive than when it’s destroyed.

What is the bioeconomy?

In light of the environmental and social challenges facing the Amazon, the bioeconomy is emerging as a credible alternative to the intensive agricultural models responsible for deforestation. Backed by leading organizations such as Embrapa and the WWF, it is based on a fundamental principle: making the most of natural resources while preserving ecosystems.

In practical terms, the bioeconomy involves sustainably harnessing biological resources to generate economic value. In the Amazon, for example, this involves establishing agroforestry systems, adding value to forest products such as açaí, and maintaining ecological balance.

Why is the bioeconomy essential in the Amazon?

This model stands in direct contrast to traditional extractive practices. Whereas some activities involve clearing the forest to make way for intensive crops such as soybeans for cattle feed, the bioeconomy offers the opposite approach. It is based on the idea that the forest can become a sustainable source of income, provided it is preserved.

In this context, the economic value of açaí plays a crucial role. By generating a steady income for producers, it reduces the pressure to convert land into intensively farmed areas. The forest thus becomes more profitable when left standing than when it is destroyed, which serves as a powerful tool against deforestation.

How Nossa! Applies the Bioeconomy

The example of Nossa! provides a concrete illustration of how the bioeconomy can be implemented at the sector level. By building a supply chain centered on açaí, the company demonstrates that it is possible to combine economic performance, social impact, and biodiversity conservation.

A Regenerative Farming Model

From an environmental perspective, more than 201 hectares are now managed using regenerative practices, in accordance with protocols developed in collaboration with Embrapa. This approach aims to preserve existing ecosystems while enhancing their resilience. It is accompanied by restoration efforts, including the planting of 300 native trees to enhance biodiversity and improve the structure of the plots.

For Nossa!, protecting the Amazon means actively managing biodiversity based on scientific principles. To ensure that the açaí comes from truly sustainable areas, 82% of our partner producers conduct a comprehensive forest inventory in collaboration with our teams.

This approach is based on a specific methodology developed by Embrapa, which focuses on striking a balance between production and biodiversity: 16 trees of various species for every 25 acai clumps on a 25 × 25-meter plot. When the açaí density becomes too high—a sign of a depleted system—forest tree species are replanted to restore a richer and more resilient ecosystem.

Local Value Creation

Economically speaking, in 2025, Nossa! purchased nearly 1,400 metric tons of açaí directly from its partner cooperatives, representing approximately 100,000 baskets. This injection of value into the local economy has been accompanied by a rise in sustainable practices, with a 78% increase in certified organic volumes and the widespread adoption of fair trade across all volumes.

A tool to combat deforestation

This model plays a crucial role in the fight against deforestation. By providing stable and lucrative economic opportunities, it significantly reduces the incentive for farmers to sell their land or convert it to intensive uses such as soybean cultivation or cattle ranching. As a result, the forest becomes more profitable when it is preserved than when it is destroyed.

On-site support from Nossa!

The impact also relies on structured, people-centered support. More than half of our Brazilian CSR team’s time is spent in the field. This time allows us to provide regular follow-up with producers. To elaborate, in 2025, 52 people were trained on essential topics such as financial management, sustainable agriculture, and workplace safety. In addition, the installation of 12 stingless bee hives helps improve pollination, boost yields, and generate supplemental income.

The Bioeconomy at the Heart of Global Climate Challenges

The bioeconomy is gradually emerging as a key driver in the fight against climate change. At COP30 in 2025, the bioeconomy was highlighted as a concrete solution for balancing economic and social development with the preservation of biodiversity.

In this context, Nossa! actively participated in the discussions to share a grassroots perspective and highlight a supply chain model based on regeneration. The goal was to amplify the voices of producers and demonstrate that the bioeconomy is not a theoretical concept, but a reality already taking shape in the Amazon.

This statement was based in particular on concrete examples. As Gustavo, an açaí producer with the APREMARMU association, explains: 

“For us, the bioeconomy isn’t just a concept—it’s a matter of economic survival. I’ve talked about our transition to agroforestry: by combining açaí with cacao, cassava, and forest tree species, we lower the temperature of the plot and retain moisture.”

The projects presented here show that integrated approaches—combining agroforestry, scientific research, and local expertise—can strengthen the resilience of agricultural systems. The example of beekeeping integrated with açaí cultivation illustrates this dynamic. By promoting pollination, it improves yields while supporting biodiversity and diversifying communities’ sources of income.

These initiatives are based on close cooperation between businesses, researchers, and producers. They demonstrate that the transition to sustainable models can only be achieved through a collective approach, rooted in local communities and driven by those who depend on the forest for their livelihoods.
